The Perseid meteor shower peaks overnight from 12 to 13 August 2026. The best time to watch from the UK is between midnight and first light on the 13th, and this year there is no Moon at all — so the faint meteors that are usually washed out will be visible. Under a dark sky, expect somewhere between 50 and 100 meteors an hour.
That combination — peak activity, new Moon, warm nights — is the best set of Perseid conditions the UK has had in years.
When to look
The shower is active from 17 July to 24 August, but the rate is low for most of that. It climbs steeply in the few nights either side of the peak and drops away quickly afterwards.

Predictions for the exact moment of maximum vary by several hours between sources, which is normal for meteor showers and nothing to worry about. What matters practically is that the small hours of the 13th are your best bet, with the 11th–12th a strong second. The nights after the peak fall off faster than the nights before it, so if you have to choose, go early rather than late.
Why after midnight matters so much. The meteors appear to radiate from a point in the constellation Perseus. Before midnight that point sits low in the north-east, so a large share of the meteors are happening below your horizon. As the night goes on the radiant climbs, and the number you can actually see roughly doubles. Going out at 10pm and giving up at 11pm is the single most common way to be disappointed by a meteor shower.
Why 2026 is unusually good
Two reasons.
No Moon. Moonlight is the usual spoiler. In a bad year the Perseids peak under a bright gibbous Moon that acts as natural light pollution and hides everything except the brightest meteors. In 2026 the peak falls on a new Moon, so the sky is as dark as your location allows all night.
The eclipse tells you where the Moon is. New Moon means the Moon is between us and the Sun — which is exactly why there's a deep partial solar eclipse across the UK on the evening of the 12th, the biggest since 1999. The eclipse and the perfect meteor conditions are the same astronomical fact seen twice.
So the 12th gives you an eclipse at sunset and the year's best meteor shower before dawn. It's a genuinely remarkable day, and it won't repeat.
Where to look
Not at the radiant. This is the mistake almost everyone makes.
Meteors near the radiant appear short and foreshortened because they're travelling towards you. The long, dramatic streaks appear 30–50° away from it. So don't stare at Perseus — look at a patch of sky well off to one side, and keep your gaze soft and wide rather than focused.
The practical version: lie back, take in as much sky as you can, and let the meteors come to you. Perseus rises in the north-east through the evening, so facing roughly east or south-east and looking high will serve you well.
You do not need a telescope or binoculars. They narrow your field of view, which is exactly wrong for meteors. Naked eye only.
How to actually see more of them
- Get away from lights. This makes more difference than everything else combined. If you can't reach a dark site, at least get into a garden, park or lane where no streetlight is in your direct field of view, and put a hedge or building between you and the worst of it. - Give it 20 minutes. Dark adaptation takes that long, and it improves for up to 40 minutes.
- Stay off your phone. One glance at a bright screen undoes the whole 20 minutes. If you must use it, put it in red-light or night mode and turn the brightness right down.
- Lie down. Craning your neck for an hour is genuinely painful. A reclining garden chair, a sun lounger, a picnic blanket or a foam mat transforms the experience.
- Dress for a much colder night than it is. Clear August nights get properly cold at 3am, and you'll be lying still. Hat, extra layer, blanket, flask. People go home because they got cold long before they go home because they got bored.
- Give it at least an hour. Meteors clump. A quiet twenty minutes tells you nothing, and then you'll get five in ninety seconds.
- Bring someone. Partly for the company at 3am, partly because two people watching different bits of sky see substantially more than one.
What you're actually watching
The Perseids come from Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, which takes about 133 years to orbit the Sun. Every August the Earth passes through the trail of debris it has shed, and grains of that trail — mostly sand-grain to pea sized — hit the atmosphere at tens of kilometres per second.
They don't burn up by friction so much as by compression: the grain slams into the air ahead of it faster than the air can move out of the way, and that compressed air gets hot enough to vaporise the particle and make the surrounding gas glow. The streak you see is a column of glowing air, tens of kilometres up, that lasts about a second.
Perseids are fast and bright, and the shower produces a good share of fireballs — meteors bright enough to light the ground briefly and leave an afterglow hanging in the sky for a second or two afterwards. Those are the ones people remember.
The Delta Aquariids are also active at the same time, so a few of the meteors you see won't be Perseids at all. They'll seem to come from lower in the south.
Realistic expectations
"Up to 100 an hour" is the figure that circulates every August and it needs qualifying. That's the zenithal hourly rate — what a perfect observer would see under a perfect sky with the radiant directly overhead.
